Spice it Up a Notch with Nutmeg! 2009 Launched!

We are looking forward to another year of online discussions and collaborative writing around a great selection of Nutmeg Award nominees! This year we have a few new features for both teachers and students. We are thrilled that Eastern Connecticut State University graduate students in Susannah Richard's class will be contributing engaging book hooks and response activities. They will be maximizing the potential of Web2.0 tools to provide relevant and connected learning for students. Thank you students! Look for their activities to be posted by the end of April.

We have a new Spice it Up with Nutmeg! project blogthis year. This blog will be used as a place for communication between us and all of those involved in both the teen and intermediate wikis. Updates, news, information and questions for the group to discuss will be posted frequently.

Future Projects
We have three new projects in the works. The first, Around the World One Story at a Time, will involve students in learning about other cultures through books, discussions, collaborative research and authoring. The goal of our second upcoming project, American Scientists: An Endangered Species? will be to change many students' perceptions of scientists as white eccentric males wearing stereotypical items such as lab coats and eyeglasses. Students will construct a broader view of what a scientist is and what they do through researching the problem, examining perspectives, conducting surveys and interviews, reading biographies, and writing and discussing both in the classroom and with other participating classsrooms. The culminating project will be a "Stars of Science" website, designed to inspire kids across the country to pursue science. Our third project, Small Steps, BIG Impact students will learn about climate change and research the climate changes issue, examining multiple resources and perspectives. In this project, students will develop an action plan for a small step that they can take individually and/or in their school that combined with other schools' small steps, will make an impact on the problems they uncovered in their research.
